History of Wildflower Cottages
The stone plaque in the back wall of Foxglove Cottage indicates that it was built in 1876. Like most of the other houses and cottages in the village it was originally occupied by the families of quarrymen and farm workers. It has been a holiday cottage since 1994 and in 2003 we also opened Columbine Cottage next door for holiday bookings.
Alton was once a thriving rural community perched high on the rolling hills of Derbyshire. It boasted numerous farms and small-holdings, a working quarry, three pubs, a church and a chapel. One of those pubs, the Blacksmith’s Arms, was on land owned by us and now used as extra parking for Wildflower Cottages. Until the 1950s Alton was barely nudged by progress – electricity did not arrive in the village until 1953 – but during this decade more than half of the rustic cottages with cold stone floors were condemned and demolished as many families moved down to the industrial valley to live and work.
Today Alton is a sleepy hamlet of less than 25 greystone cottages, providing an ideal base for a holiday or short break in the Peak District.
